How to Download TikTok Videos on iPhone
TapDownload is a free website that saves public Snapchat, TikTok and X videos and photos from their link. It is not affiliated with Snap Inc., TikTok or X Corp.
On iPhone, open the TikTok video, tap Share, then Download, and it's saved to Photos. For a copy without the watermark, copy the video's link, paste it into TapDownload in Safari, and save the MP4. Safari puts it in the Files app; open it there, tap Share, then Save Video to add it to your camera roll.
How do you download TikTok videos on iPhone?
An iPhone gives you two routes to a saved TikTok. The TikTok app's own button puts the video straight into Photos, but it can add the watermark and it only works when the creator allows downloads. Saving from the link in Safari gives you the clean MP4 TikTok plays, but iOS puts browser downloads in the Files app first, so there's one extra step to get it into your camera roll.
| TikTok app: Share, Download | Safari + TapDownload | |
|---|---|---|
| Lands in | Photos | Files, then Photos in one tap |
| Watermark | Can be added | None |
| Needs TikTok installed | Yes, and logged in | No |
| When the creator turned downloads off | Button is hidden | Public posts open; please ask the creator first |
| Sound only (MP3) | No | Yes |
Both are below, step by step, along with the fixes for the two problems iPhone users hit most: a video that "saved" but isn't in Photos, and TikTok refusing to save your own videos.
How do I save a TikTok to my camera roll with the TikTok app?
- Open the TikTok app and go to the video.
- Tap the Share arrow on the right side.
- Tap Download in the share menu. A progress circle appears, then the video is in the Photos app, under Recents.
On a profile, you can also press and hold a video's thumbnail, tap Share, then Download. If you don't see Download at all, TikTok's help page says the creator doesn't allow it.
"Saved", but it's not in Photos
TikTok needs your permission to add videos to Photos. TikTok's help page says to check it in your iPhone's settings:
- Open the iPhone Settings app.
- Find TikTok in your list of apps. On newer iOS versions, tap Apps first.
- Tap Photos and choose Full Access or Add Photos Only.
Then go back to TikTok and download the video again. Also check that your iPhone has free storage: TikTok's help page lists a full device as a cause of "download failed".
How do I save a TikTok without the watermark on iPhone?
This route doesn't need the TikTok app at all, and the file has no logo or username on it.
- Copy the link. In the TikTok app, tap Share on the video, then Copy link. If someone sent you a TikTok link in Messages or WhatsApp, press and hold it and tap Copy.
- Open TapDownload in Safari. Go to the TikTok downloader. Tap the box, then Paste. The search starts by itself.
- Tap Save. Safari asks whether you want to download the file. Tap Download. A small download arrow appears in Safari's address bar while it saves.
That's the video saved, but in the Files app rather than Photos. iOS does this with every download from a website: Safari can't drop files into your camera roll on its own.
How do I move a TikTok from Files to my camera roll?
- Open the Files app (the blue folder icon).
- Tap Browse at the bottom, then Downloads. It's under iCloud Drive or On My iPhone, depending on your Safari settings.
- Tap the video to open it.
- Tap the Share button (the square with an arrow), then Save Video.
It's now in Photos, under Recents, like any video you recorded. You can delete the copy in Files afterwards to free up space. A shortcut: tap the download arrow in Safari's address bar, tap the file in the list, then Share and Save Video, without opening Files at all.
The file name starts with tapdownload and the creator's username, so it's easy to find in Downloads if you saved several.
Which version should I save on iPhone?
Tap the sliders button next to Save to choose. Every iPhone from the last several years plays all of them:
- MP4 (H.264): the default, and the safest if you'll send it to other people, edit it in an app, or open it on a Windows computer later.
- Sharper (HEVC): when TikTok keeps one, a sharper copy, often 1080 pixels wide. iPhones play HEVC natively, so this is the best-looking choice if the video stays on your phone.
- MP3: just the sound, made in your browser. It lands in Files, not Music. See how to download TikTok audio as MP3 for what to do with it.
For photo posts and slideshows, TapDownload lists each picture as a JPG. In the preview, press and hold a picture and tap Save to Photos, or save the files and move them from Files the same way as a video. More in how to download TikTok photos.
Why won't TikTok let me save my own videos on iPhone?
If the Download button is missing on your own videos, or saving fails, check these in order:
- Video downloads is off. In TikTok, tap Profile, the Menu (☰), Settings and privacy, then Downloads, and turn on Video downloads. TikTok's help page names this as the fix when the download option isn't visible for your own post.
- Your account is private, or you're under 16. TikTok says downloads are off by default in both cases and can't be turned on. You can still save your drafts, with a watermark.
- TikTok can't write to Photos. Give it permission in the iPhone Settings app, as above.
- The phone is full. Free some space and try again.
Saving a draft to your camera roll
Drafts can be saved without posting: go to Profile, Drafts, tap the draft, tap More, Share, then Save post with watermark. TikTok says the draft is saved with a watermark by default, and that to save it without one you need to post it first. Drafts live only on the phone they were made on, so save the ones you care about before you change iPhones.
Why are my TikTok downloads not showing on iPhone?
Most "it didn't save" moments on an iPhone come down to where the file went. Match what you see to the fix:
| What you see | What's going on | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| TikTok said "saved", Photos is empty | TikTok can't write to Photos | Settings, TikTok, Photos: allow access, then save again |
| Safari finished, Photos is empty | Safari downloads go to Files | Files, Downloads, open it, Share, Save Video |
| Can't find Downloads in Files | It's in iCloud Drive | Files, Browse, iCloud Drive, Downloads |
| No Download button in TikTok | Downloads off, or a private video | Ask the creator; for your own posts turn on Video downloads |
| "Download failed" | Connection or storage | Free up space, use Wi-Fi, try again |
| The video plays but has no sound | The phone is on silent, or the video was posted silent | Turn off Silent mode, or check the video in TikTok |
Can I put TapDownload on my Home Screen?
If you save TikToks often, you can give TapDownload its own icon so it opens like an app, without typing the address each time:
- Open the TikTok downloader in Safari.
- Tap the Share button at the bottom of Safari.
- Scroll down and tap Add to Home Screen, then Add.
Now the routine is: in TikTok, Share, Copy link; tap the TapDownload icon; tap Paste. Saved files still go to Files, so the step to move them to Photos stays the same.
How do I share a saved TikTok from my iPhone?
Once a TikTok is in Photos, you can send it like any video you recorded: open it, tap Share, and choose AirDrop, Messages, Mail or another app. A few things help:
- Chat apps often shrink videos. WhatsApp and similar apps compress what you send. AirDrop sends the file as it is, at full quality.
- HEVC copies are for Apple devices first. If you're sending to someone with an old Windows computer, save the default H.264 MP4 instead.
- Credit the creator. A copy saved from the link has no username on it, so add their @name when you post or forward it.
That's also the answer to "how to save a TikTok video to camera roll so I can post it somewhere else": save it, then post it from Photos. If it isn't your video, ask the creator before you post it on another platform.
How do I free up space after saving TikToks?
Saving from Safari leaves two copies once you've moved a video to Photos: one in Photos, one in Files. TikToks are small, a few MB each, but they add up if you save a lot:
- Delete the Files copy. In Files, open Downloads, press and hold the video, and tap Delete. The one in Photos stays.
- Check iCloud. If Downloads is in iCloud Drive, those copies also count against your iCloud storage. Deleting them in Files frees both.
- Empty Recently Deleted. Photos keeps deleted videos for 30 days. Open Albums, Recently Deleted, to clear them sooner.
If a Safari download stops halfway
Keep Safari open on the TapDownload page until the download arrow finishes. If you switch apps or the screen locks, iOS can pause the download. On a slow connection, the default H.264 copy is smaller and finishes sooner than the sharper HEVC one.
Does it work the same on iPad and Mac?
Everything above works the same on an iPad: the TikTok app's Download button sends videos to Photos, and Safari downloads go to the Files app. If you use TapDownload on a Mac instead, the MP4 goes to the Downloads folder and plays in QuickTime.
However you save it, the video belongs to its creator. Saving it to watch later is fine. If you want to repost it, ask first, and name them in your caption, especially as the clean copy doesn't carry their username. TapDownload isn't affiliated with TikTok or Apple.
